Upgrade Options for discontinued MSD Contactless PIN pads

Overview:

For several years, card brands have discouraged the use of MSD (Magnetic Stripe Data) NFC/Contactless transactions. When EMV certifications were first released, EMV Contactless was not yet available; Chip data was used for card insertion, but MSD (Magnetic Stripe Data) was used for Contactless. By the time EMV Contactless was made available, earlier PIN Pad models may no longer have qualified for certifications. Depending on the age of an installation, a merchant may still be using MSD for Contactless transactions and card brands will begin levying fines against those merchants as early as April, 2022.

To avoid these card brand fines, merchants will either need to exclusively support EMV Contactless OR not support Contactless at all.

Upgrade Options to avoid Card Brand Fines

Option 1: Upgrade to a PIN Pad that supports EMV Contactless; may also require an application upgrade:

Option 2: Upgrade to the latest client controls

  • NETePay™
    • dsiEMVUS® V1.60 or later
    • dsiPDCX® 1.78 or later
  • Tran™/TranCloud™ – 4.00.23/8.00.23

In these versions, if the “Contactless Support” Parameter is set to MSD, then all Contactless will be disabled. If you have an EMV Capable device and the contactless parameter mistakenly indicates MSD, be sure to make the adjustment to EMV Contactless.
